MaruL nIkkiyAr left his elder sister (tilakavatiyAr) and joined the Jain monks after searching for a good religion to follow. He studied Jain religion and its literature extensively. He spent a few years with the Jain monks. In the mean time his sister (who was a staunch devotee of Lord Shiva) prayed to the lord to let her brother return to his hometown and follow shaivaism. It appears the lord inflicted a severe gut pain on maruL nIkkiyAr which the Jain monks couldn’t cure. Then he abandoned the Jain monks. The monks would not take it lightly and caused him lots of troubles (with the permission of the king) such as placing him in a lime kiln, poisoning his food, letting him crushed by an elephant, and finally tying him to a stone and throwing him in the sea. MaruL nIKKIyAr survived all such punishments miraculously. At the end he came to his sister who gave him the sacred ash and asked him to worship at the local Shiva shrine. At that time he sang 10 songs on the lord at tiruvatigai shrine. Let us consider 4 songs from the tirumuRai patigam (4.11) below.

Meaning in Thamizh for all the songs below                                        (Source: http://thevaaram.org/thirumurai_1/onepage.php?thiru=4&Song_idField=4011

Meaning in English: By worshipping the holy feet of the effulgent lord whose utterance is vEdam,  one can survive any punishment including being tied to a stone and thrown in the sea (referring to his punishment at the hands of the Jain monks). The five-letter word “na ma si va ya” is the one which will be a lifetime refuge.

.
Meaning in English:  Among flowers, lotus with its numerous petals is the most precious.  The redeeming feature of the cows is the products they give for propitiating lord Shiva.  The invaluable characteristic of a king is to rule his citizens with fairness and justice. The precious word that the tongue can utter is “na ma si vA ya”

Meaning in English: At home the lamp eliminates darkness. Likewise the five letters “na ma si vA ya” enlighten the various words, various places and all other good incidents,

Meaning in English: 4.11.10: The song above is a phalastuti. It details the benefit that accrues to the devotee who recites the 10 songs. The gist of the song: If you worship the holy feet (adorned with flowers) of the lord who bears the goddess PArvati on his left side and carries a deer in his hand, and utter the 5-letter word na-ma-si-vA-ya  you won’t face any troubles.

Return of maruLnIkkiyAr to his hometown.

Background: When maruLnIkkiyAr (prior name of appar) decided to desert the Jain religion when the Jain monks couldn’t cure his intense colic pain, he  returned to tiruvatigai vIraTTAnam on the banks of the GeDila River where his sister lived and begged her pardon for going away from shaivism (of which she was a devotee). She gave him some sacred ash and asked him to worship lord Shiva. This is the very first song that he sang to receive the grace of Lord Shiva. After he sang 10 songs his colic pain disappeared and he became a shaivite devotee and earned the moniker tirunAvukkarasar.

 Shrine: tiruvatigai vIraTTAnam (திரு அதிகை வீரட்டானம்)

Meaning in English: Oh lord who dwells in the shrine thiruvatigai vIraTTAnam on the banks of GeDila River, I am not aware of any sins I committed in my current birth. In such a case I have got an intense colic pain in my stomach which is very much incurable and it makes me quite immobile. I can’t bear the pain. It tortures me like the agent of death. Only you can eliminate that misery. If you do that I will worship your holy feet keeping your thoughts in my mind day and night.

PiththA piRai sUDi

PiththA piRai sUDi
Composer: SundaramUrthy nAyanAr

paN: indaLam     பண்:  இந்தளம்

tirumuRai 7.1 (tiruveNNai nallUr shrine)

The Carnatic rAgam “hindOLam” and the HindustAni rAgam MAlkauns, were  known in ancient times in Thamizh isai as a paN (பண்) or tune called indaLam (இந்தளம்). It was a designated melody for the land classified as marutam (வயல்) which is mostly cultivable farmland surrounded by ponds, and streams. Likewise the other landscapes such as mountains, forests, seashores, and deserts also had designated tunes characteristic of the landscape in question.

The so-called paN-isai (பண் இசை) has been in vogue for almost 2000 years. The sangam literature in the beginning of first millennium CE mentions the features of paN isai. One of the five epic poetries in Thamizh, Silappadikaram, gives extensive details of music and dance and the specific features. There is a total of 103 paNs known and 24 of them were handled in tEvAram songs. They all have been equated with modern Carnatic music rAgams. Please refer to  the references given at the end. To give some examples: paN takkEsi -à. KAmbOji, paN naTTapADai -à nATTai, paN kuRinji -à HarikAkambOji, paN kausikam---à Bhairavi, paN pazhampanchuram -à SankarAbharaNam, paN mEgarAgakuRinji -à nIlAmbari.

PaN isai also has what are known as swarams, kural, tuttam, kaikkiLai, uzhai, iLi, viLari, and tAram corresponding to the swarams in Carnatic music sa, ri, ga, ma, pa, da, ni, respectively. Let us look at the tEvAram songs of SundaramUrthy nAyanAr in the paN indaLam (rAgam: hindOLam) below. We select 3 songs out of the first patigam (decad) on the tiruveNNainallUr shrine. In all Sundarar sang a total of 1011 songs  on various Shiva shrines in Thamizh country. You can get all the song lyrics in Thamizh script here

Song #1 (7.1.1)

You dwell in the sanctum called “aruL tuRai” in the village tiruveNNainallUr, on the southern banks of the river PeNNai. You have occupied my mind forever. So I shall never forget you. I became your slave long ago. It is not befitting for me now to argue that I am not your slave.

Meaning: Oh lord who dwells in the sanctum “aruL tuRai” on the southern banks of the river PeNNai, you pervade in the body and life of all beings, the sky, land, seas, and mountains. I became your slave long ago and it is not right to argue otherwise now.

Song #10 (7.1.10)

ArUranem perumARkAL allEnena lAmE.

Meaning:  The water that falls from the clouds pelts the earth and spreads all over the land to gain the reputation of being the source of fertility.  I became a slave to you lord, who dwells in the sanctum “aruL tuRai” on the southern banks of the river PeNNai. It is not right that I now argue that I am not your slave.

Composer’s Bio:  Sundarar was born in the town called tirunAvalUr  to SaDaiyanAr and isaignAniyAr in the community of devotees of lord Shiva. His given name was nambiyArUrAn. He got the name Sundarar as a result of his being extremely handsome. When, as a child, he was playing in the street the local king of the tirumunaippADi country (middle Thamizh country) saw him and requested his parents that he be brought up in his palace. Sundarar learnt all arts under the king’s guardianship.

When he got to marriageable age (15 years old), his biological parents arranged to get him married to a girl who was the daughter of a devotee of lord shiva. On the wedding day an old man showed up and stopped the wedding claiming that Sundarar was his slave and he should come with him. He produced a palm leaf document as evidence.  Sundarar ridiculed the old man as a lunatic and refused to go with the old man. However, the old man prevailed and took him to the temple in the next town. After Sundarar went into the temple sanctum following the old man, the old man disappeared. Then Sundarar realized that it was lord Shiva who came in the guise of the old man in order to guide him along. He then sang his very first song in praise of the lord, “pittA piRai sUDi…” (as a mark of calling the old man a lunatic. Pittan means lunatic in Thamizh). The composer castigates those who do not worship the lord. Even if they are highly wise, it is useless if they are not devotees of the lord. He takes a dig on those (in the society) who are greedy and are interested only in accumulating wealth for themselves without having any kindness to fellow citizens. He has no regard for those who neglect their parents. In general he is highly critical of anybody who  do not worship the lord sincerely.

Meanng:
Even if one attains the nine mystical powers, if men do not have devotion toward lord Shiva they are like a withered crop. Ignoring the advice of others but not possessing any iota of wisdom themselves will make them great sinners.

Forgetting the grace of god and acting without proper wisdom is akin to a lifeless crop. Those who do not worship lord Shiva (who wears the cool moon on his head) are great sinners.

Those who act without taking sin and merit into account in their actions but only paying attention to wealth are akin to chaff. Those who are angry and miserly cheapen themselves and their lives and are thus sinners.

Those who insult their parents and teachers are just lifeless creatures. Those who fight with others like dogs are also sinners.

Those who do not get enlightened by listening, seeing, and experiencing the truth, are without substance.  Those who do not seek the refuge and get the unbounded grace of lord nIlakaNThar (lord Shiva) are real sinners.
