MaruL nIkkiyAr left his elder sister (tilakavatiyAr) and joined the Jain monks after searching for a good religion to follow. He studied Jain religion and its literature extensively. He spent a few years with the Jain monks. In the mean time his sister (who was a staunch devotee of Lord Shiva) prayed to the lord to let her brother return to his hometown and follow shaivaism. It appears the lord inflicted a severe gut pain on maruL nIkkiyAr which the Jain monks couldn’t cure. Then he abandoned the Jain monks. The monks would not take it lightly and caused him lots of troubles (with the permission of the king) such as placing him in a lime kiln, poisoning his food, letting him crushed by an elephant, and finally tying him to a stone and throwing him in the sea. MaruL nIKKIyAr survived all such punishments miraculously. At the end he came to his sister who gave him the sacred ash and asked him to worship at the local Shiva shrine. At that time he sang 10 songs on the lord at tiruvatigai shrine. Let us consider 4 songs from the tirumuRai patigam (4.11) below.

Meaning in Thamizh for all the songs below                                        (Source: http://thevaaram.org/thirumurai_1/onepage.php?thiru=4&Song_idField=4011

Meaning in English: By worshipping the holy feet of the effulgent lord whose utterance is vEdam,  one can survive any punishment including being tied to a stone and thrown in the sea (referring to his punishment at the hands of the Jain monks). The five-letter word “na ma si va ya” is the one which will be a lifetime refuge.

.
Meaning in English:  Among flowers, lotus with its numerous petals is the most precious.  The redeeming feature of the cows is the products they give for propitiating lord Shiva.  The invaluable characteristic of a king is to rule his citizens with fairness and justice. The precious word that the tongue can utter is “na ma si vA ya”

Meaning in English: At home the lamp eliminates darkness. Likewise the five letters “na ma si vA ya” enlighten the various words, various places and all other good incidents,

Meaning in English: 4.11.10: The song above is a phalastuti. It details the benefit that accrues to the devotee who recites the 10 songs. The gist of the song: If you worship the holy feet (adorned with flowers) of the lord who bears the goddess PArvati on his left side and carries a deer in his hand, and utter the 5-letter word na-ma-si-vA-ya  you won’t face any troubles.

Return of maruLnIkkiyAr to his hometown.

Background: When maruLnIkkiyAr (prior name of appar) decided to desert the Jain religion when the Jain monks couldn’t cure his intense colic pain, he  returned to tiruvatigai vIraTTAnam on the banks of the GeDila River where his sister lived and begged her pardon for going away from shaivism (of which she was a devotee). She gave him some sacred ash and asked him to worship lord Shiva. This is the very first song that he sang to receive the grace of Lord Shiva. After he sang 10 songs his colic pain disappeared and he became a shaivite devotee and earned the moniker tirunAvukkarasar.

 Shrine: tiruvatigai vIraTTAnam (திரு அதிகை வீரட்டானம்)

  ----tirumuRai 4.1.1

Listen to the above song here

Meaning in English: Oh lord who dwells in the shrine thiruvatigai vIraTTAnam on the banks of GeDila River, I am not aware of any sins I committed in my current birth. In such a case I have got an intense colic pain in my stomach which is very much incurable and it makes me quite immobile. I can’t bear the pain. It tortures me like the agent of death. Only you can eliminate that misery. If you do that I will worship your holy feet keeping your thoughts in my mind day and night.

General Comments:
This song is a paean on Lord ShivA as well as the twin quartets of ShivA’s famous devotees. The first quartet of Appar (also known as TirunAvukkarasar), SundaramUrthy nAyanAr, TirugnAna Sambandar, and MANikka VAcagar lived in the first millennium CE. Of this quartet, the first three are known as tEvAram trinity and are members of the group of famous devotees of ShivA, known as 63 nAyanmArs. MANicka VAcagar, who lived much later than the 63 nAyanmArs, was technically the 64th nAyanmAr. All the four contributed to the growth of Shaivism against established Jainism in the Thamizh country by composing songs on Lord ShivA at various shrines.

The song is also a tribute to the second quartet of Adi ShankarA (788-820 CE), ThAyumAnavar (18th century CE??), AruNagirinAthar (15th century CE), and RAmalinga vaLLalAr (1823-1874 CE). Adi ShankarA went far and wide in India to spread Shaivism by debating and defeating other competing religious sect leaders. ThAyumanavar wrote 1400 hymns in simple Thamizh with profound meaning. AruNagirinAthar was a devout Murugan worshipper, who wrote myriad songs on Murugan including the famous Tiruppugazh. RAmalinga vaLLalAr, with no formal education, wrote thousands of verses inculcating universal love and peace, all of which are compiled in a book called “TiruvaruTpA”.

The composer wanted to draw inspiration from the great saint poets to write his own compositions. Such a desire openly manifested in this simple invocatory song. The beauty of this song lies in the deference that the composer had for the great shaivite saint philosophers-cum-poets which is expressed succinctly.

Composer’s Bio:
Suddhananda Bharathi (1897-1937) was a yOgi, devotee, and freedom fighter all mixed in one. He was modesty personified. He wrote a lot of poems in Thamizh on bhakti, peace, and universal love with an easy flow of the language. Many of his songs have been set to music by others, among them Calcutta K. S. Krishnamurthy figuring prominently.

Some of the songs of Suddhananda Bharathi that are popular are: aruL purivAi (hamsadwani), kaNNeDuttAkilum kANIrO (simmEndra madyamam), sakala kalA vANiyE (kEdAram), tUkkiya tiruvaDi (shankarAbharaNam), jangAra shruti seiguvAi (pUrvikalyANi), and kaNNanE en kaNavan (kalyANi).
