Meaning:
Pallavi:  Lord Muruga, there is no one who is my support except you in this world.

Anupallavi: You are the six-faced god provided to us by your mother (the daughter of himavAn). You do not show your ferocious face (shown only to your foes) to your devotees but offer your grace.

CaraNam: You ride the dancing peacock and go around. You have 12 hands with which you protect your devotees. You like to listen to music composed in precious sweet Thamizh. You shine like  nectar in my life.

Composer’s Bio:    
                                                                                                                        
M. M. Dandapani Desikar (1908-1972) was born at TiruccenkATTAnkuDi (the birthplace of the famous nAyanmAr ciruttoNDa nAyanAr) near TiruvArUr. He was a veritable multi-talented composer in Thamizh music.. He was a musician, teacher, and movie actor as well. He appeared on the music scene when Thamizh isai was having a renaissance in the 1940s and contributed so much to it.

He learnt music and tEvAram initially from his father (Muttaiah Desikar) who belonged to the traditional family of OduvArs (the group that sings devotional songs in the temples). Later he learnt music from others including the violin doyen KumbakONam Rajamanickam PiLLai. He went on to become a professor and head of the department of music at Annamalai University in Cidambaram.

He gave a lot of concerts while teaching at Annamalai University. He published quite a few Thamizh music works under the auspices of Thamizh isaic Cangam.  He got several awards including “isai arasu” and “isaip pEraRignar”. He acted creditably in many movies such as PaTTinaththAr, NandanAr, ThAyumAnavar, MAnickavAcagar, and Tirumazhisai AzhvAr, all of which featured his singing prominently.

Meaning:
Pallavi: I have to feast my eyes on  glorious lord KArthikEyan  to my heart’s delight.

Anupallavi: He is the reason for the fame of KadirkAmam that I have heard about.

CaraNam: In this earth (pArakam) even before the devotees make their appeal for help,  he hastens with his spear in his hand to eliminate their miseries. He killed the three asurAs, tArakAsuran, singamukan, and SUrapadman and thereby offered relief for the celestials. He is the nephew of Vishnu (the progenitor of MAran---also known as Manmathan/Cupid). He is Murugan the darling of the world.

Composer’s Bio:
Mayuram Viswanatha Sastry (1893-1958) was born in Terezhundur, near Mayuram, the same place where the great Thamizh poet Kamban was also born. He was drawn to music through his mother. From a young age he had a flare for composing music.

He studied vEdAs and Sanskrit while young. He was initiated into music by Fiddle Subbaiyer. Later he learned music from teachers in Chettinadu. He became a professional musician and gradually turned into a composer. He published several books of which, “VaLLi PariNaya MaNipravALa Satakam”, “Murugan PugazhmAlai”, and “Murugan Keertanai” are noteworthy.  He was also the first person to set TirukkuRaL verses to music.

The late musicians G. N. Balasubramanian (GNB), and Madurai Mani Iyer (MMI) popularized many of MVS’s songs. The khamAs piece “jayati jayati bhArata matA”, rendered by the late Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer on August 15, 1947 in honor of Indian independence  was especially well-liked by listeners as it kindled nationalistic feelings.

Background: This song is in praise of the presiding goddess, MangaLAmbikai, in the local temple known as agastIshar temple in the village of VaiyachEri (near ThanjAvUr). The composer brothers were born in this town and lived there and surrounding villages including tiruvaiyARu. Read their biography given at the end of this article.

Pallavi: Is it proper for you to wait for an opportune time, Oh divine mother, to help your devotee?

Anupallavi: MangaLAmbikE, you dwell in this town (vaiyachEri) full of fragrant bushes.

CaraNam1: You are fortunate to occupy half the body of agastIshar who dances in the hall sporting the crescent moon on his head. I have been considering you as my succor from the beginning. Please do not make me a helpless person, Oh compassionate one?

CaraNam2: You get rid of our multiple births in this world. Without singing your praise I have been living a mundane life seeking food for my stomach thinking that is the proper way to do thereby earning sinful consequence. Please help me think of your sacred feet and plant them in my heart. After enslaving me early on is it proper for you to subject me to a lowly status?

CaraNam3: You are sitting on my heart (flower) like a swan with an emerald hue. You are my refuge to get away from the marital bondage. You are the one I, umAdAsan, worship in this world. All the celestials including KubEran (lord of wealth) worship your sacred feet. When will you take me under your wings?

Composers’ Bio:
Anai ayyar and ayyA ayyar were the cousins of Doraiswamy ayyar, the father of the composer-musician brothers, Ramaswami Sivan and Maha Vaidyanatha Sivan. They lived in the early to mid-part of 19th century and taught music to the two Sivans. They were junior contemporaries of the composers, Thyagaraja, Syama Sastri, and Muttuswamy Dikshitar, collectively known as the Trinity of Carnatic music. They lived in Vaiyacheri and Tiruvaiyaru in Thanjavur district. They were patronized by the king Serfoji II of ThanjAvUr. Together they wrote at least 26 Thamizh and 12 Telugu compositions that are currently available. They use the signature “umAdAsan” in their kritis.

Their theme was devotion sprinkled with philosophy. They sang as a pair on Lord Siva and Devi. Their favorite deities are MangaLAmbikai of Vaiyacheri (the subject of the song under discussion), Dharmasamvardhani (aRam vaLartta nAyaki in Thamizh) of Tiruvaiyaru , and PranatArtihara/pancanadIswarar (also known as ayyArappan in Thamizh) of Tiruvaiyaru.

Other songs of Anai Ayya Brothers that are devotional and philosophical are: varmamA en mIdil (sAvEri rAgam), bhajanai seyyavE (kEdAram), inda paraka (nAdanAmakriyA), and amba nannu, a Telugu song (tODi).
