Composer: Anai-ayyA brothers (also known as VaiyachEri brothers)


Background: This song is in praise of the presiding goddess, MangaLAmbikai, in the local temple known as agastIshar temple in the village of VaiyachEri (near ThanjAvUr). The composer brothers were born in this town and lived there and surrounding villages including tiruvaiyARu. Read their biography given at the end of this article.

Meaning:
Pallavi: Is it proper for you to wait for an opportune time, Oh divine mother, to help your devotee?

Anupallavi: MangaLAmbikE, you dwell in this town (vaiyachEri) full of fragrant bushes.

CaraNam1: You are fortunate to occupy half the body of agastIshar who dances in the hall sporting the crescent moon on his head. I have been considering you as my succor from the beginning. Please do not make me a helpless person, Oh compassionate one?

CaraNam2: You get rid of our multiple births in this world. Without singing your praise I have been living a mundane life seeking food for my stomach thinking that is the proper way to do thereby earning sinful consequence. Please help me think of your sacred feet and plant them in my heart. After enslaving me early on is it proper for you to subject me to a lowly status?

CaraNam3: You are sitting on my heart (flower) like a swan with an emerald hue. You are my refuge to get away from the marital bondage. You are the one I, umAdAsan, worship in this world. All the celestials including KubEran (lord of wealth) worship your sacred feet. When will you take me under your wings?

Composers’ Bio:
Anai ayyar and ayyA ayyar were the cousins of Doraiswamy ayyar, the father of the composer-musician brothers, Ramaswami Sivan and Maha Vaidyanatha Sivan. They lived in the early to mid-part of 19th century and taught music to the two Sivans. They were junior contemporaries of the composers, Thyagaraja, Syama Sastri, and Muttuswamy Dikshitar, collectively known as the Trinity of Carnatic music. They lived in Vaiyacheri and Tiruvaiyaru in Thanjavur district. They were patronized by the king Serfoji II of ThanjAvUr. Together they wrote at least 26 Thamizh and 12 Telugu compositions that are currently available. They use the signature “umAdAsan” in their kritis.

Their theme was devotion sprinkled with philosophy. They sang as a pair on Lord Siva and Devi. Their favorite deities are MangaLAmbikai of Vaiyacheri (the subject of the song under discussion), Dharmasamvardhani (aRam vaLartta nAyaki in Thamizh) of Tiruvaiyaru , and PranatArtihara/pancanadIswarar (also known as ayyArappan in Thamizh) of Tiruvaiyaru.

Other songs of Anai Ayya Brothers that are devotional and philosophical are: varmamA en mIdil (sAvEri rAgam), bhajanai seyyavE (kEdAram), inda paraka (nAdanAmakriyA), and amba nannu, a Telugu song (tODi).
