Background:  When the child Sambandar (age 2) was left on the steps of the temple pond when his father went to take a bath, the child got hungry and started crying. At that time it is believed that lord Shiva and goddess PArvati appeared in the sky on the bull mount. The goddess took pity on the child and fed him divine milk. Later when the father came around he saw the child with a gold cup in his hands with milk streaming down his mouth. When he asked the child about who fed him milk the child pointed to the temple tower. But the father could see nothing. He figured it must be the lord and mother goddess. The child sang the following song to clarify that it was the lord and mother goddess who graced him. The child prodigy went on to sing the praise of lord Shiva and spread shaivism all over. He later came to be known as tirugnAna sambandar (திருஞான சம்பந்தர்). In the shaivist religious lore he is known as “god’s son”.

தோடணிந்த திருச்செவியை உடைய உமையம்மையை இடப்பாகத்தே உடையவனாய், விடை மீது ஏறி, ஒப்பற்ற தூய வெண்மையான பிறையை முடிமிசைச்சூடி, சுடுகாட்டில் விளைந்த சாம்பற் பொடியை உடல் முழுதும் பூசி வந்து என் உள்ளத்தைக் கவர்ந்தகள்வன், இதழ்களை உடைய தாமரை மலரில் விளங்கும் நான்முகன், படைத்தல் தொழில் வேண்டி முன்னை நாளில் வழிபட அவனுக்கு அருள்புரிந்த பெருமை மிக்க பிரமபுரத்தில் எழுந்தருளியுள்ள பெருமானாகிய இவன் அல்லனோ!

Meaning in English:  He is the one who wears the stud in his ear. He sports the crescent moon on his head. He smears the ash from the burning ghat all over his body. He enthralled me.  Lord Brahma who is seated on a lotus prayed to him once to help in the creation of the world. Our lord granted his prayers. He has taken dwelling in this great shrine brahmapuram.
