Meaning:

Pallavi: The boon-giving lord in the kaliyugam appears in Pazhani for everyone to view.

Anupallavi:  He is the one who wields the powerful spear given to him by his divine mother goddess PArvati (known as malai magaL in Thamizh, girijA in Sanskrit ----daughter of the mountain HimavAn). He is green-hued and he is the nephew of tirumAl (PArvati and tirumAl are considered sister and brother)

CaraNam: He came as the darling son of the god with an eye on the forehead (Lord Shiva). He was reared by the Krithika ladies. He solved the problems of the celestials in short order. He gives boons to those devotees even before they seek them.

Commentary: This is a very simple paean to Lord Murugan who dwells on top of the hill at Pazhani. He took abode there (according to purANAs) after a dispute over a divine fruit between him and his divine brother GaNapati. The mythological episodes of his origin from Shiva’s third eye and his getting the divine spear from his goddess mother (PArvati) to annihilate the demon Surapadman (who was giving troubles to the celestials) are common lore.

Composer’s Bio: Periasamy ThUran (PT) (1908-1987) was born in MoDakkurichi in Coimbatore district. Right from his childhood he showed precocity for an intellectual pursuit. As a child he was greatly inspired by Mahakavi Subramanya Bharathi. He became a teacher for a living but his passion was to become a poet. He wrote about 600 songs in all with spiritual, moral, and national themes. He was very patriotic and his song “ADu rATTEy” was a hit during the freedom struggle.

PT was not a musician but he sought out some musical gurus both to learn some music and to set his songs to music. He published “isai maNi manjari” in 5 volumes. He published several other books. His major achievement was serving as the chief editor to publish a Thamizh Encyclopedia in 10 volumes.

Some other songs PT of that are rendered in concert circuits and commercial recordings are: tAyE tripura sundari (suddasAvEri), muraLIdarA gOpAlA (mAnD), murugA murugA (sAvEri), gaNa nAthanE (sArangA), and engu nAn selvEn (dwijaAvanthi).
